Rats are dirty rodents that unfortunately are very mischievous and love food sites, dark places, and warmth. They carry with them harmful bacteria and rodent viruses that are extremely unhygienic for us humans and is the last thing we want in the house.
How to identify rats at your home or office?
There are several signs we can identify them with. Most of the time, we do not get to see them because they do not usually come out in daylight. As nocturnal animals, they would find the time to play and scurry into homes at night when no one can catch them and up to no good. As residents and owners of the house, it is important that we take rats control seriously as you just don’t want rodents robbing your house’s dinner leftovers and bringing in other people’s too.
In order to set in place rodents control measures to keep them out, let’s take a look at their behaviour and how to know when one has been in. Usually, their place of entrance is through gaps in doors or windows, on roofs and through pipes that can lead from out to inside or through waterways like you see in cartoons – a slip and slide (although very uncommon). When entering the house, there are a few signs that they leave behind such as; their droppings, food spillage, you may be able to hear them with the fast footsteps – especially on wooden flooring, and dirty smears on walls (looks like oil), and bad odour around the house. In extreme cases, you may wake up to find damaged chewed up cables which can be dangerous and can cause fire and electricity explosions in the house. Therefore, taking rats, rodents and general pest control in your home is a matter of action. Here are 3 DIY tips you can use to get rid of rats yourself.
Tip 1 – Use a glue board to trap rats
Use a glue board. One of the methods of catching a rat is with placing glue boards around the house to get in the way of their exploring. Rats usually come at night to run along corridors or through kitchens and always in a hurry. Glue boards are just what it sounds like – the glue traps rodents as they step into it making it very difficult to get out. This type of rodents control is commonly used in households that are occupied as for hygiene reasons, it is important to keep checking the traps and dispose any rats or rodents that get caught in it.
Tip 2 – Live rat trap
Use a live rat trap. There are different types of traps traditional or more modern designed. Essentially, they are used for one purpose, to catch rats and remove them from your house in a safe and hygienic way. It would be extremely unhygienic to kill a rat in your home to dispose and hence using a rat trap requires the least contact and effort to get rid of it. A rat trap works by using a bait station to pull in the rat into a cage which then closes to trap the rat inside.
There are different types of baits you can use from dried fruit, nuts, greasy foods like bacon, however, if you are using soft foods it is a good idea that you set the trap up so rodents cannot easily steal the bait without getting trapped! Pet food and the use of rodenticide (can be bought at home and lifestyle stores or some supermarkets that are made to entice rodents) is also a good bait alternative to use. Avoid using soft cheeses, soft bread, pancakes etc.
Tip 3 – Snap Trap for rats
Use a snap trap. A snap trap has the ability to catch rats specifically without much effort. It does not require any form of bait and usually does the job quite quickly and painlessly for the rat. It is one of the cheapest forms of rats control that you can use in your home and is made to make it efficient and effective when needing to get rid of rats in your home.
A tip when using any kind of trap is to spread them around your house to ensure you catch them wherever they are and go.
